UNDERSTAND THE RESULT
A cut can add height, width or softness in particular places. The finder measures your outline, finds its closest face shape and ranks twelve common styles by whether they add what usually balances that shape. Your texture, density, upkeep and taste matter just as much, so treat the list as a shortlist to discuss with a stylist, not a rule.
Read the exact scoring methodEach of the twelve styles in the finder is tagged with what it adds: crown height, a fringe, width at the cheeks or chin, length, softness, a side part or short sides. This is how those effects rank for each outline.
Most lengths work. Keep the outline visible and choose by texture, upkeep and the look you want.
Try: soft side part, textured pixie, textured crop, low quiff.
Height at the crown, an off-centre part and length past the jaw add vertical lines. Fullness right at the cheeks adds width.
Try: textured pixie, low quiff, brushed back, textured crop.
Use with care: relaxed curtains, curtain fringe.
Soft layers, side parts and lengths that move past the jaw soften the angles. Blunt ends exactly at the jaw emphasize its width.
Try: soft side part, long soft layers, long bob (lob), relaxed curtains.
Fringes and volume at cheek or chin level add width. Tall crown volume and long straight lengths add even more length.
Try: relaxed curtains, curtain fringe, soft waves, textured crop.
Use with care: textured pixie, low quiff.
Fullness near the chin and a side-swept or curtain fringe balance the upper face. Extra crown height widens the top.
Try: side-part bob, textured crop, soft side part, relaxed curtains.
Use with care: textured pixie, low quiff.
A fringe adds width at the temples and chin-length fullness balances the jaw. Volume right at the cheekbones widens the widest point.
Try: side-part bob, textured crop, soft side part.
Use with care: textured pixie, low quiff.
Volume at the crown and temples balances a wider jaw. Blunt ends at jaw level add width where the outline is already broad.
Try: textured pixie, low quiff, soft side part, brushed back.
YOUR QUESTIONS, EXPLAINED
Round faces usually take height and length; square faces soft layers and side parts; oblong faces fringes and width at the cheeks; oval faces most cuts; heart faces fullness near the chin and a side-swept fringe; diamond faces a fringe and chin-level fullness; triangle faces volume at the crown and temples.
Start with what your hair does naturally, how much time you want to spend and the outline you want to balance. Use the finder for the outline. Then take the style name, an example photo and the stylist brief to your appointment.
Both. The list includes short cuts often worn by men, such as the textured crop and low quiff, and bobs, long bobs and longer layers often worn by women. Filter by length and choose what you like.
Each style is tagged with what it adds: crown height, a fringe, width at the cheeks or chin, length, softness, a side part or short sides. Each face shape has effects that usually balance it and a few that exaggerate it. Two balancing effects make a great match; an exaggerating effect earns a use-with-care note.
The finder shows examples on synthetic sample models. The optional $17.99 4-Week Report generates six hairstyle concepts from your own photo, with salon briefs and upkeep notes. The ranking here stays free.
Wear it if you like it. The notes describe common visual effects, not rules. A stylist can adapt most cuts by moving where the volume sits or changing the part.
Yes. Curly, coily and very fine hair hold shape differently, and density changes how much volume a cut shows. The finder ranks outlines only, so ask your stylist how a cut will behave with your texture.
