HEART FACE HAIRSTYLES

Hairstyles for heart-shaped faces: balance the forehead and chin

Fullness at chin level and a soft fringe: haircuts that balance a wider forehead and narrow chin.

What counts as a heart-shaped face?

A heart-shaped face is wider through the forehead and cheekbones and tapers to a narrower jaw and chin, sometimes with a pointed chin or a widow's peak. Our detector reads heart when the lower face clearly tapers and the upper face is clearly wider than the lower.

When the forehead is narrow as well as the chin, the same tapering jaw reads as diamond instead. Both shapes share many hairstyle choices, so if your result says one is close to the other, read both guides.

The idea: add fullness low, soften the top

Three effects balance a heart shape: fullness near the chin, a fringe that softens the forehead, and an off-centre part. The one to watch is crown height, which widens the upper face, the part that is already wider.

Chin-length bobs, waves that begin around the jaw and side-swept fringes are the classic heart-shaped face haircuts for exactly this reason.

Women's hairstyles for a heart-shaped face

The side-part bob is the strongest match: its ends add width at chin level and the deep part softens the forehead. The curtain fringe and soft waves are good matches. The long bob and long soft layers are your call, and the textured pixie is marked use with care because of its crown lift.

A pixie can still work on a heart face: ask for length and texture at the sides and a soft, side-swept fringe rather than height on top.

Men's haircuts for a heart-shaped face

The textured crop, soft side part and relaxed curtains are good matches: each brings a fringe or a part that softens the forehead. The short crew cut is your call. The low quiff and brushed-back hair lift the top and widen the upper face.

A fuller beard, especially along the jaw and chin, is one of the most effective ways for men to balance a narrower lower face.

What to ask your stylist

Ask for weight around the chin and a soft line across the forehead:

  • Side-part bob: “Chin-length bob with a deep side part and softly bevelled ends.”
  • Curtain fringe: “Long hair with a split fringe that opens at the centre and sweeps past the cheekbones.”
  • Textured crop: “Short tapered sides, a choppy top and a short forward fringe.”
  • Keep volume low at the crown and fuller from the cheekbones down.
  • If you have a widow's peak, a side-swept fringe sits better than a straight one.

Glasses, brows and checking your shape

Light, rimless or bottom-weighted frames such as oval and panto balance a heart face; heavy browline tops add width up top. For brows, a soft, rounded arch works best.

Before you book a cut, check the shape on a clear front photo. Many faces sit between two shapes, and the face shape detector says when yours is close to another one. If it is, take ideas from both.
