DIAMOND FACE HAIRSTYLES

Hairstyles for diamond faces: widen the forehead and chin

Fringes and fullness at the chin: haircuts that balance wide cheekbones and a narrow forehead and jaw.

What counts as a diamond face?

A diamond face is widest at the cheekbones, narrower at both the forehead and the jaw, with a tapering chin. Our detector reads diamond when the lower face clearly tapers and the forehead is no more than 0.91× the cheek width.

It is one of the less common results and is often close to heart or oval. High cheekbones are the defining feature, and most people with a diamond face want to keep them visible.

The idea: add width above and below the cheekbones

Three effects balance a diamond outline: a fringe, which adds width at the temples; fullness near the chin; and an off-centre part. Two work against it: crown height, which makes the narrow temples look narrower by contrast, and volume right at the cheeks, which adds width where the face is already widest.

Women's hairstyles for a diamond face

The side-part bob is the strongest match: the deep part and chin-length ends add width above and below the cheekbones. The long bob, curtain fringe, long soft layers and soft waves are your call: each has one effect that helps and one that doesn't, or none at all. The textured pixie is marked use with care for its crown lift.

With the curtain fringe and waves, the detail decides: keep fringe pieces long enough to sit at the temples, and start the waves at the jaw rather than at the cheekbones.

Men's haircuts for a diamond face

The textured crop and soft side part are good matches: a forward fringe or a part adds width at the temples. The short crew cut and relaxed curtains are your call. The low quiff and brushed-back hair add height and narrow the temples by contrast.

Leave a little length at the sides above the ears rather than a skin fade, and consider a beard that adds width at the chin.

What to ask your stylist

Ask for width at the temples and the chin, and nothing extra at the cheekbones:

  • Side-part bob: “Chin-length bob with a deep side part and softly bevelled ends.”
  • Textured crop: “Short tapered sides, a choppy top and a short forward fringe.”
  • Keep the crown low and the sides above the ears a little full.
  • Tuck one side behind the ear to show off the cheekbones without adding width.

Glasses, brows and checking your shape

Oval and panto frames, or a strong browline, balance wide cheekbones; narrow, angular frames emphasize them. Curved brows soften the cheekbones too.

Before you book a cut, check the shape on a clear front photo. Many faces sit between two shapes, and the face shape detector says when yours is close to another one. If it is, take ideas from both.
