UNDERSTAND THE RESULT

How is eye shape measured from a photo?

Eye shape guides describe the same three things: how open the eye is, which way the outer corner points and how far apart the eyes sit. FaceRater measures each from 478 facial landmarks after levelling your head: the lid opening against the eye's width, the angle from the inner to the outer corner, and the gap between the inner corners against one eye width. The bands come from studio photos of 102 adults, so most people read almond, level and average spacing, and the page says when you sit close to a neighbouring type. Eyelid folds (monolid, hooded or double lids) are not visible in landmarks, so the result gives you a quick mirror check instead.

Types of eye shapes

Eye shape is a mix of three traits you can measure, plus the eyelid fold. Your result names one type for each trait and says when you sit close to the next one.

TraitTypeWhat it looks like
OpennessLong and narrowYour eyes are wider than they are tall, with a calm, elongated outline. Often described as sleek or elegant.
AlmondYour eyes are about three times as wide as the lid opening is tall and taper gently at both corners: the most common shape, and the easiest to style in different ways.
RoundYour eyes show more of the iris and the lid opening is tall for its width, which reads as open, bright and youthful.
Corner tiltUpturnedYour outer corners sit higher than the inner corners, which gives a lifted, alert look.
LevelYour inner and outer corners sit at about the same height.
DownturnedYour outer corners sit a little lower than the inner corners, which reads as soft, gentle and approachable.
SpacingClose-setThe gap between your inner corners is a little less than one eye width.
Average spacingThe gap between your inner corners is about one eye width.
Wide-setThe gap between your inner corners is more than one eye width.

Almond, hooded, monolid: what the photo can and can't see

Openness, tilt and spacing are distances between landmarks, so a clear front photo measures them well. The eyelid crease is a fold of skin that landmark models do not trace, so monolids, hooded lids and double lids need a mirror. Deep-set eyes and protruding eyes need a side view, which a single front photo does not show.

YOUR QUESTIONS, EXPLAINED

Eye Shape Test: frequently asked questions

What are the different types of eye shapes?+

Most guides combine three traits. Openness: almond (about three times as wide as the lid opening is tall, the most common), round (taller for its width, more iris showing) and long or narrow. Tilt: upturned, level or downturned outer corners. Spacing: close-set, average or wide-set. Eyelid type adds a fourth trait: monolid, hooded or double lids. One person's eyes are a mix, such as upturned almond eyes that are slightly wide-set.

How do I know if I have almond eyes?+

Almond eyes are about three times as wide as the lid opening is tall and narrow gently toward both corners. In the test, almond means a lid opening between 0.31 and 0.37 of the eye's width. A value near an edge is marked as close to round or narrow.

What's the difference between upturned and downturned eyes?+

It is the direction of the line from the inner corner to the outer corner after the head is levelled. Upturned eyes have outer corners clearly higher (above about 5.5° here); downturned eyes have them level with or below a gentle 2°. Most faces sit in between, which reads as level. The canthal tilt test shows each eye's angle separately.

Can a photo tell if I have hooded eyes or monolids?+

Not reliably. Landmark models trace the lid opening and the corners, not the crease above it, so we don't guess. Look straight into a mirror with relaxed eyes: no crease means monolids, a crease hidden by skin from the brow bone means hooded lids, and a visible crease above the lashes means double lids.

What makeup suits my eye shape?+

Work with the traits you have: liner extended past the outer corner lengthens round eyes; a lifted outer wing balances downturned eyes; lighter shadow on the inner corners widens close-set eyes, and defined inner corners bring wide-set eyes together. Your result lists the tips for your own readings.

Why does my eye shape change between photos?+

Squinting, smiling, a head tilted up or down and wide-angle selfies all change the lid opening and corner angle. Use a level camera at eye height, a relaxed face and even light, and compare photos taken the same way.

Is the eye shape test free and private?+

Yes. The scan runs in your browser, your photo is not uploaded and the result is saved on this device. No account is needed. To go further, your AI style coach can turn the result into a makeup routine, brow shape and frame picks.
