Why does my face rating change between photos?

Check the photo conditions first.

A photo-based rating measures the view the camera captured. Move the camera, turn your head or raise one eyebrow and the visible landmarks can move, even though you are the same person. A different result is therefore a prompt to compare the images before drawing a conclusion about your face.

FaceRater corrects estimated head roll, but that correction cannot turn a three-quarter portrait into a true frontal view. It also cannot reconstruct facial depth or undo all lens distortion. Two clear photographs can still show different proportions.

Four variables are worth keeping consistent.

Keep four things consistent between photos: camera distance, head position, expression, and light and obstructions. Camera distance affects perspective. A close selfie and a portrait from farther away do not show the same relationships between the nose, cheeks and ears. Keep the same camera and a similar distance when you want a repeatable comparison.

Head turn changes the visible widths on the two sides. Chin position changes the outline and vertical distances. Expression can move eye corners, brows and lips; a smile is a real expression, but it is a different measurement condition from a relaxed face.

Finally, shadows or obstructions can make the model’s job harder. Check the drawn lines around glasses, hair across the face, strong eye makeup or a bright light from one side. A detection error is different from a measured asymmetry.

Try a simple repeat-photo protocol.

Use a steady phone near eye level and even light, then take two relaxed frontal photos without changing your setup; you do not need studio equipment. Keep the complete face visible in both. Avoid a beauty filter, portrait retouching or a crop that removes the chin or forehead.

• Use the same camera, approximate distance and framing.
• Look straight ahead with your head level and jaw relaxed.
• Keep lighting and expression similar between shots.
• Inspect both landmark overlays before comparing the scores.

Compare the measurements that changed.

If the eye-width balance moves noticeably, look for head rotation, squinting or a misplaced eye corner. If the height-to-width ratio changes, check camera position, chin angle and the outline. These are things to inspect, not diagnoses of why a value changed.

Choose a usable photo rather than keep chasing a score.

Pick one clear, representative photo instead of chasing a higher score: there is no published FaceRater confidence interval that makes a particular decimal change meaningful. Do not invent one from repeated uploads or average unrelated shots into a supposedly true attractiveness score. If the readings move, the photos and detection quality still need context.
